On January 17th, Canadian Lithuanian Youth Association (CLYA) held its second Independence Cup basketball tournament at Resurrection parish for local Lithuanian clubs. Toronto “Ausra”, Hamilton “Kovas”, Toronto “Rezistencija” and Etobicoke’s “Karve nemoka” (KNM) fought it out for the Cup in a day of friendly sportsmanship and camaraderie.
In preliminary rounds “Ausra” was able to defeat “Rezistencija” and “Kovas” came away with the win over “KNM.” “Rezistencija” took third spot claiming victory over “KNM” with some clutch 3 pointers from outside shooters Rimas Rekus, Gintas Dirse and Peter Stauskas. The final showdown was between “Kovas” and “Ausra” that afternoon. In a tightly fought battle, “Ausra” was victorious at the end of the day as a result of some great shooting from Paulius Sergautis and big rebounding from the Baronaitis brothers – Vaclovas and Kestutis.
Following the tournament, players, spectators and friends were able to catch up over the traditional Lithuanian dishes “kugel” and fried bread at Bar Lokys in Toronto. It was fantastic to see new and familiar faces out and about on a cold January day.
CLYA would like to thank all who participated in the event. Particular thanks go to Resurrection parish and Toronto “Ausra” for the use of the hall and equipment.
