On Sunday, January 31st, CLYA (Canadian Lithuanian Youth Association) hosted our 3rd Annual Independence Basketball Cup at Resurrection Parish.
Four strong teams participated; Hamilton’s “Kovas,” Missisauga’s “Vytis,” Toronto’s “Ausra,” and Toronto’s “Rezistancija.” The event attracted over 100 community members – from players to supportive friends and family.
Four games were played throughout the day with “Kovas” and “Vytis” starting off the first game at 12pm. “Vytis” won, advancing to the gold medal round. Next, “Ausra” and “Rezistancija” battled it out, with “Rezistancija” coming out victorious and advancing to the gold medal game, leaving “Ausra” and “Kovas” to play for 3rd place.
At lunch break, we held our first ever 3-point shoot-off. Each team entered their best 3-point shooter into a 1 –minute, 3 point shoot-off. The goal was to score as many baskets as possible in 1 minute. Congratulations to Yosef Molakandov, who scored 18 baskets, claiming the title of our first ever 3-point CLYA shoot-off champion!
After lunch it was back to business as “Ausra” and “Kovas” played an intense game for bronze. “Kovas” came out victorious and it was down to our final match-up between “Vytis” and “Rezistancija.” “Vytis” came out victorious, claiming the Independence Cup for a second time (“Ausra” won the cup last year). Congratulations to our boys who played some great basketball throughout the day. You are all champions!
We’d like to thank Resurrection Parish for generously offering their facilities for this tournament, our friend Stasys Kuliavas for connecting us with some solid referees, “Ausra” Sports Club for lending us your scoreboard, and to Orwell’s Pub for hosting a great post-tournament reception! A special shout goes to our CLYA Board Members Lauren Vaitonis-O-Grady and Adomas Kuliesius for keeping score for all four games!
Here’s to next year’s tournament and we hope to see you all at our upcoming CLYA events. Be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (@kanadosljs) and Instagram (@kljs_official). Iki greito!
