We invite you to remember…
The Lithuanian Canadian Community (KLB) and the Lithuanian embassy in Ottawa will honour the 70th anniversary of the Lithuanian Charter and the Day of Mourning and Hope with a public commemoration on Sunday, June 16th at 12:30 PM at the Church of the Resurrection / Prisikėlimo parapija (1 Resurrection Rd. in Toronto).
The keynote event will be a screening of the Lithuanian film Pėlėdų kalnas (Owl Mountain) by director Audrius Juzėnas. It is a historical feature covering the period from 1947 to 1953 and the conflict between Lithuanian nationals and the Soviet occupying forces, which was marked by terrorism, killing and Siberian exile. The story follows the children of Kaunas‘ intelligentsia: young high-school students who survived the chaos of war, and who, afterwards, must decide what their futures will be – whether to emigrate, retreat into the forests, or adapt to the new order. It is the story of hope and selfless sacrifice in the name of liberty. It reveals to us the face of the postwar generation and the fearful atmosphere that made them fight to keep the spirit of independence alive in their beloved nation‘s heart.
An informational session will accompany the screening about a new memorial for the partisans located in Kryžkalnis.
