Lithuania Park is a 2.2 hectare park that lies on the west side of Keele Street north of High Park. It features a ball diamond, a multipurpose sports field, a wading pool and a children’s playground.
In 2013, the city of Toronto received a petition with almost 130 signatures from Ward 13 residents who live near Lithuania Park, in favor of a motion to change the name to Oakmount Park, which is what the park was initially called in 1926.
The park was located in an area that for decades was surrounded by residents of Lithuanian descent, and the name change was a means of Toronto City Council to honour the contribution the Lithuanian community made to the City of Toronto.
In spite of the formal request for the change back to Oakmount Park, local Councillor Sarah Doucette, along with the Parks, Forestry and Recreation division are proposing to maintain the park name and, instead, name the sports field located within Lithuania Park, the “Oakmount Sports Field”. City policy requires that neighbouring residents be consulted about requests such as these and decided the consultation would be for the compromise suggested by the Councillor.
A sign will be erected in the park regarding this potential name change, as per City policy, on July 31st. It will ask for feedback solely on naming the sports field, not renaming the park.
