Detroite gyvenantis Amerikos lietuvis Juozas Vaičiūnas užsimojo įvesti cepelinų dieną – diena, kai visas pasaulis valgo cepelinus!
Jo iniciatyva būtent vasario 7 dieną nacionalinis lietuvių patiekalas suvienys po visą pasaulį išsibarsčiusius lietuvius.
Kaip atsirado ši diena? Ir kodėl ji paskelbta būtent pirmąjį vasario sekmadienį? Pasaulinės cepelinų dienos idėja kilo stebint amerikietiškojo futbolo finalus, kurie Amerikoje, pasak J.Vaičiūno, – didžiulis įvykis, įtraukiantis šeimas, gimines, bendruomenes. „Kartą man kilo mintis – amerikietiškojo futbolo kamuolys yra tarsi didžiulis cepelinas. O finalą čia žiūri visi – taip pat ir lietuviai. Tad kartą ir sakau: gal per finalą, kuris paprastai būna pirmąjį vasario sekmadienį, kažką padarome su cepelinais? Taip ir atsirado cepelinų dieną!

February 7th is World Zeppelin Day for Lithuanian communities around the world
The zeppelin or „cepelinas” is a traditional Lithuanian dish that consists of boiled grated potatoes stuffed with meat. They are often served with sour cream mixed with fried bacon bits, onions, dill or butter. Zeppelins are also often made with mushroom or cheese stuffing.
The zeppelin holiday was reportedly invented by the Lithuanian-American community. Across the US, the Superbowl, the game that will decide that year’s American football champions, draws people together for large annual viewing parties. For one such party, Juozas Vaičiūnas, member of the Lithuanian-American community in Detroit, noticed that zeppelin’s would be the perfect food, given their similarity to footballs. Since then, the holiday, which has gone international, has coincided with the Superbowl, which is usually held on the first Sunday in February.
