Yahoo Sports corrects NBA player’s birthplace from USSR to Lithuania

Following a protest by the government of Lithuania, Yahoo Sports has removed the reference to NBA player Donatas Motiejūnas being born in the “USSR” in his online profile

Reporting on the Lithuanian basketball player, several US media outlets had specified that Motiejūnas was born in „Kaunas, the USSR”, as did broadcasters of NBA games.

Lithuanian Ambassador to the US Rolandas Kriščiūnas then approached Yahoo Sports and the Houston Rockets, Motiejūnas’ club, asking for the details of his country of birth to be corrected. His place of birth has now been changed to “Kaunas, Lithuania”.

Motiejūnas was born in Kaunas on September 20, 1990, six months after Lithuania had declared independence from the Soviet Union, but almost a year before it was recognized internationally. In his letters, Ambassador Kriščiūnas reminded them that the United States government had never recognized Lithuania’s incorporation into the Soviet Union in 1941 and asked to correct Motiejūnas’ place of birth to „Kaunas, Lithuania”.
